Let’s talk about temptation with food. We all experience the seductive power of sweet-and-salty. We are human. But how are we handling the lure of food?
Let’s take a peek at 1 Corinthians 10, which contains warnings for us to learn from the past…
“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-14
Notice the encouragement: it’s common for everyone to be tempted! It says WHEN you are tempted, not IF you are tempted! And how amazing that He WILL provide a way out!!!!
Like TerKeurst says in her book Made To Crave, “When tempted, I either remove the temptation or remove myself from the situation.”
God will help you in those moments of temptation. We can flee from those foods and cling to Him for true satisfaction! We can ask Him to help us choose what is right! This is how victory with food unfolds. Let’s deepen our relationship with Him while loosening the chains of food bondage.
When old ways resurface or sweets beckon, I can seek HIM first. I can ask Him to help me. I can get to the core of the underlying temptation. And so can you, friend.
Let’s be practical in the process.
- Spend more time with the Lord in prayer and Bible study.
- Instead of setting ourselves up for failure, remove obstacles (they’re probably in your kitchen right now).
- Knowing that temptation can strike at any point, stay equipped with ways to make wise choices; simply staying nourished with the foods God grows can minimize cravings naturally.
- Keep your Bible close, and stock your kitchen with health alternatives.
