How To Pick A Protein Powder

How To Pick A Protein Powder

If you’ve been to a “big box” store, or even more challenging a “health food” or supplement store, looking for a protein powder, then you may have felt just a tad bit overwhelmed.

There are SO MANY label claims and SO MANY options!  No fear, we are here to help with 10 tips to choosing a protein powder that will fuel your body with only the finest ingredients.

No whey or casein.  This rules out most protein powders.  Choose a protein powder that is free of all forms of dairy so we can avoid belly bloat , GI upset, inflammation, and weight gain.  Like it or not, it’s estimated that over 50% of the population is sensitive to milk proteins and drinking them is likely doing more harm than good.  Yes this often goes for the natural stuff too.

No soy.  Too often a genetically-modified food (more on that coming) full of estrogen, it is hard on the thyroid and inhibits a key enzyme we need to digest protein.  Stay away.

Plant-based.  Consider going with a rice / hemp / pea protein.  Egg protein is another option that’s more expensive and may clash with the common egg sensitivities you may have plus the consistency can be wacky and it’s often super pricey.  Plant proteins are better for the environment, include healthy fiber, are low allergenic, include antioxidants, and help you stay fuller longer.

At Least 15 Grams of Protein Per Serving.  A lot of protein powders have only 10 or so grams of protein per serving.  When using a protein powder the whole idea is to get plenty of PROTEIN.  15 grams or more of protein is ideal for post-workout when you’re adding fruit or other carbs and 20 grams is great for a meal replacement (about the equivalent of an average piece of meat or 3 eggs). If your protein powder is lower in protein then you’re going to need to use more than one scoop per serving doubling the calories and cost of your shake.

No gluten.  If it is not labeled gluten-free then it may contain this everyday “poison” that leads to an expanded waistline as well as “brain fog.”  We want our protein powder to be as pure and wholesome as possible.

No artificial sweeteners or added sugars.  Investigate the nutrition label before pulling out your credit card.  Look for words like: sucralose, splenda, aspartame, maltitol, and saccharin.  These dangerous chemicals lead to overeating, obesity and worse.   If you see these ingredients, put the product back on the shelf.    Your Momsanity coaches prefer sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit.

Non-GMO.  Unfortunately, many plant based proteins are from genetically modified sources. Numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems, and others are on the rise.  While we’re not claiming a cause and effect here, it’s not worth risking.

Include Antioxidants.  Why not add in some immunity boosting, inflammation killing antioxidants while you’re sipping your protein?  We love those sourced from berries and greens.

Add some healthy MCTs:  We’re a huge fan of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) because research shows improved blood lipids, increased energy expenditure, weight loss, neuroprotection, and potential reduction in risk of cancer.  Additionally, MCTs make natural powders creamier and taste delicious.

Consider Collagen:  Collagen is a big buzz word right now and many are supplementing with it in their coffee and adding it to their protein.  Collagen is a protein found in our bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin and cartilage. Essentially, it’s the building blocks that keep us in one piece! But, it naturally declines with age (as do most things) leaving us vulnerable to achy joints, sore muscles, wrinkly skin and brittle bones. Supplementing with collagen is fantastic for all of the above, plus gut health, and some studies even show it helps with sleep and anxiety.
